Before you put your stamp on your new home and begin to unpack, now is a great time to give the property a really good clean. Cleaning now ensures you are starting with a clean slate and you can really get into all those hard to reach areas before you install any heavy furniture or belongings. If you don’t have time to clean and you can afford it, getting a cleaner in to give your new home a once over before you move in can take a lot of stress away.

Think Safety

We are sure all you want to do when you arrive in your new home is dig out the kettle and cups and find a comfortable place to sit down for a while and whilst this should definitely be on your to-do list, think safety first and locate all the safety features in your home and check they are working. This could include fire alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, burglar alarms or fire extinguishers. Pop in some fresh batteries to get some peace of mind.

Tackle a Box at a Time

We understand the excitement of wanting to unpack and get settled in your new home right away but try to tackle one box at a time as you unpack and always unpack a box in the room that the contents will be living in. This cuts out the overwhelm and feeling like you have bitten off more than you can chew with boxes littering every surface and items strewn everywhere.

Head for a Walk Around the Area

Have you gotten to know the local area at all? If you have moved to a different area, a walk around the locality can help you to feel more settled in and give you a heads up on where the locals shops, chemists and other amenities you might need are situated. You might even bump into one of your new neighbours!

Find Your Water, Gas and Electricity Mains

Some people can go for years without knowing where the water, gas or electricity mains are in their homes which is fine until you need them in an emergency. It’s always best to familiarise yourself with your new property and know where everything is in case of unforeseen emergencies such as gas leaks, water leaks and bursts or electricity trips. You will thank yourself for this later!
